What Is IFC Therapy?
Interferential Current Therapy (IFC) is a non-invasive electrotherapy technique used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. It works by delivering medium-frequency electrical currents that penetrate deep into the tissues, stimulating nerves, muscles, and circulation without causing discomfort.
The interferential current is created when two different electrical frequencies intersect, producing a low-frequency therapeutic effect deep in the body. This makes it more effective than standard TENS therapy, especially for chronic pain and musculoskeletal injuries.
What is TENS Therapy?
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is also non-invasive device used for pain relief. It delivers low-voltage electrical impulses through electrodes placed on the skin, stimulating nerves and pain pathways to reduce discomfort.
TENS is commonly used for acute and chronic pain conditions and can be self-administered at home!
TENS works by:
- Blocking pain signals from reaching the brain (via the Gate Control Theory).
- Stimulating endorphin release, the body’s natural painkillers.
- Improving circulation and reducing muscle tension.
What Can IFC Therapy Treat?
- Acute & Chronic Pain – Helps with back pain, neck pain, joint pain, and post-surgical discomfort.
- Muscle Spasms & Tightness – Relaxes tight muscles and improves circulation.
- Inflammation & Swelling – Helps reduce edema and promote fluid drainage.
- Nerve Pain & Neuropathy – Beneficial for sciatica, diabetic neuropathy, and nerve compression syndromes.
- Sports Injuries & Strains – Assists in the recovery of sprains, strains, and tendonitis.
- Arthritis & Joint Stiffness – Reduces pain and stiffness in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Post-Surgical Rehabilitation – Helps reduce post-op swelling and improve mobility.
- Circulatory Disorders – May help improve blood flow to affected areas.
What Can TENS Therapy Treat?
Chronic Pain Conditions – Fibromyalgia, arthritis, back pain, and nerve pain.
Acute Injuries – Sprains, strains, and post-surgical pain.
Sciatica & Neuropathy – Helps relieve nerve-related pain.
Muscle Spasms & Tension – Reduces tightness in the neck, back, and shoulders.
Joint Pain & Arthritis – Helps with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Post-Workout Recovery – Reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
Migraine & Headaches – Can reduce tension headaches when applied to the upper neck.
Benefits of IFC Therapy
- Deep Pain Relief – Provides stronger and deeper pain relief than traditional electrical stimulation.
- Non-Invasive
- Reduces Swelling & Inflammation – Stimulates fluid movement and reduces edema.
- Improves Blood Circulation – Enhances oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues.
- Muscle Relaxation & Recovery – Helps reduce muscle spasms and stiffness.
- Accelerates Healing – Stimulates cellular activity and tissue regeneration.
- Customizable Intensity & Frequency – Can be adjusted based on the patient’s condition and pain tolerance.
Benefits of TENS Therapy
- Non-Invasive – Provides a natural pain relief
- Customizable Intensity & Frequency – Adjust settings to match pain type and location.
- Immediate Pain Relief – Many patients feel relief within minutes of use.
- Portable & Convenient – Can be used at home, work, or while traveling.
- Reduces Muscle Tension – Helps relax tight muscles and spasms.
- Supports Recovery & Healing – Encourages blood flow and tissue repair.
- Can Be Used Long-Term – Safe for daily or periodic use as needed.
How IFC Therapy Works During Treatment
- Electrodes are placed on or around the painful area.
- A therapist adjusts the frequency and intensity based on the patient’s needs.
- The electrical current creates a deep, comfortable tingling sensation without pain.
- Treatment usually lasts 12-30 minutes, depending on the condition.
- Many patients report immediate pain relief after a session!
How TENS Therapy Works During Treatment
- Electrodes are placed on or around the painful area.
- The TENS unit delivers low-voltage electrical impulses through the skin.
- The sensation feels like a mild tingling, buzzing, or pulsing.
- Treatment lasts 15-30 minutes, depending on the condition.
- Can be used multiple times per day as needed.
- TENS does not "cure" pain but helps manage and reduce symptoms!
IFC and TENS are both electrotherapy techniques used for pain relief and muscle stimulation, but they differ in application, effectiveness, duration of effect, and depth of penetration.
